Interests

I grew up in Mumbai, India till the age of 12, after which my family and I moved to Los Angeles. Growing up I watched and helped my mom in the kitchen as she put together complex Indian meals for a family of 5. Every meal was carefully thought out, as authentic as possible, and diverse in cultural origin. It taught me about the importance of detail, thinking about what each person wants, and doing things for others out of love. Her approach to cooking also got me to be curious about food, and about people’s culture through food.

While I wasn’t in the kitchen, I was listening to or singing/playing music with my two older brothers. My dad taught us how to play the piano and sing, starting at 6 years old. We won many school competitions, but more importantly, we learned to appreciate good music and entertain people through music. As kids we were “forced” to sing at family events, but today, I’m grateful to be the frontman of an alt-rock band in New York, writing and playing original music with my closest friends.

My friends and I did theater in school. It was addictive. Playing characters and seeing the world through someone else’s point of view became our past time. Sure, we did musicals and straight theatre, but we stuck to improv comedy – following our inspirations at UCB’s Cagematch in LA, and comedy legends like Will Ferrell and Steve Carrell. Today I do improv throughout New York at jams or with my group – No Expectations.
